Overcoming Test Anxiety: Tips for NCLEX Success

Updated: Mar 23, 2023

Test anxiety is a common problem among nursing students preparing for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). Here are some tips to help you overcome test anxiety and perform your best on exam day.

Identify the Source of Your Anxiety

The first step in overcoming test anxiety is to identify the source of your anxiety. Are you worried about failing the exam? Are you nervous about the format of the exam? Once you identify the source of your anxiety, you can take steps to address it.

Practice Relaxation Techniques

Relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, and visualization can help reduce stress and anxiety. Practice these techniques regularly, especially before and during the exam. This will help you stay calm and focused.

Get Enough Sleep and Exercise

Getting enough sleep and exercise is essential for reducing stress and anxiety. Make sure to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night and exercise regularly. Exercise can help release endorphins, which can improve your mood and reduce stress.

Visualize Success

Visualizing success can help boost your confidence and reduce test anxiety. Imagine yourself passing the exam with flying colors and becoming a licensed nurse. This positive visualization can help you feel more confident and prepared for the exam.

Take Practice Exams and Seek Support

Taking practice exams and seeking support from friends, family, or a therapist can also help reduce test anxiety. Practice exams can help you get comfortable with the exam format and identify areas where you need to improve. Seeking support from others can provide emotional support and help you feel less isolated.

Overcoming test anxiety is a process, but with the right mindset and strategies, you can perform your best on the NCLEX and become a licensed nurse.

Being prepared increases confidence which in turn reduces test anxiety. One of the preparations that worked for us was developing the NCLEX Strats and applying them.
